Abstract
Enterocyte damage is associated with hypotension and tachypnia in patients with SIRS. Gut function failure may permit enteric bacteria to enter the blood, thereby elevating IL-6 levels and inducing a systemic inflammatory response, resulting in multiple organ failure.
