Abstract

•Distinction between physical, cognitive and mood enhancement regarding doping.•Comparison between mood enhancement and sport psychology.•No ethical problem with the acceptance of mood enhancement in sport.

Traditionally, the prohibition of doping is based on banning the consumption of substances that enhance performance. This approach defines inclusions on the World Anti-Doping Agency's Prohibited List, which has historically focused on substances or treatments that enhance physical performance. A problem emerges from the rising number of substances or treatments that enhance cognition or mood. The argument presented in this paper is the comparison between the previous model in which sport psychology was an accepted tool for enhancing performance and the new mood enhancers. My conclusion is that there is no moral difference between the two mechanisms.
