Abstract
The system of linear FE equations for electric field E is solved with a direct solver MUMPS. Then the magnetic field H can be found, in which the required derivatives are computed numerically using cubic spline interpolation. The 3-D FE algorithm has been validated by comparisons with both the 3-D finite-difference solution and 2-D FE results. Two model types are used to demonstrate the effects of anisotropy upon 3-D magnetotelluric responses: horizontal and dipping anisotropy. Finally, a 3D sea hill model is modelled to study the effect of oblique interfaces and the dipping anisotropy.
