Abstract
This paper will present the human physiological basis concerning survival at higher altitudes and in the vacuum of space. Based upon those the paper will discuss the necessity for pressure suits for suborbital spaceflight passengers and pilots. The paper will also focus on design implications for pressure suits for spaceflight participants of varying age and health. The authors will enable and encourage the discussion whether or not pressure suits should be mandatory for suborbital human spaceflight.
