Abstract
Family-centered care means understanding and respecting each family's unique needs and preferences, partnering as members of the care team, and providing highly individualized care. Family-centered care has been described as a partnership approach to healthcare. The study group GREEN (Groupe de réflexion et d'évaluation de l'environnement du nouveau-né) of the French Society of Neonatology believes that it is important to clarify the definition of the family of a hospitalized newborn and to approach this definition from a legal, sociological and philosophical point of view. This approach is based on the description of difficulties coming from early separation between the infant and his/her parents, siblings, and family and from the evaluation of current practices. We also aim to propose recommendations and implementation strategies.
