RésuméLa présente recherche étudie dans quel contexte sont émis des comportements d'agitation verbale (AV). L'étude a été réalisée auprès de 15 participants atteints de démence, résidant en institution et présentant des comportements agités. Les participants ont fait l'objet d'une observation assistée par un ordinateur de main. La fréquence et la durée des épisodes d'agitation ont été calculées. L'heure, le lieu, l'activité pratiquée, la présence d'autres personnes et l'utilisation de contention ont été notés. Au total, 180 heures d'observation ont été réalisées, chaque participant étant observé pendant 12 heures, soit de 8 h00 à 20 h00. Les résultats montrent que les participants sont verbalement agités 10 % du temps. L'AV est émise lorsque les participants sont dans leur chambre (94 %), non engagés dans une activité particulière (81 %), seuls (80 %) et contentionnés (78 %). L'AV émerge surtout après 14 h00 (73 %). Certaines caractéristiques contextuelles sont associées à de plus grandes concentrations d'AV que d'autres.
This research examines the contexts in which verbal agitation (VA) behaviours occur. The study was conducted with 15 participants suffering from dementia who live in an institution and display agitated behaviours. Participants were subject to observation assisted by a hand-held computer. The frequency and duration of agitation episodes were calculated. The time of day, the location, and the activity engaged in, the presence of other persons and use of physical restraint were noted. A total of 180 observation hours were conducted, with each participant being observed for 12 hours, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The results show that the participants are verbally agitated 10% of the time. VA is manifested when participants are in their rooms (94%), not engaged in a specific activity (81%), alone (80%) and physically restrained (78%). VA occurs mainly after 2 p.m. (73%). Certain contextual characteristics rather than others are associated with greater VA concentrations.
