Abstract
In recent years, the possibilities for treating stress urinary incontinence have increased dramatically. Since the introduction of TVT in 1996 and due to its success, many new suburethral slings were developed. In this article, the way of deciding which surgical treatment is most appropriate is described. Decision making about surgical treatment of stress urinary incontinence is based on a sound pre-operative diagnosis and should be preceded by looking at non-surgical interventions. The choice between the several surgical options should first be to consider its effectiveness (high clinical success rate and positive change in quality of life). Second, the surgical procedure should be the least invasive one. Third, it may not have major anatomical and functional adverse effects. And finally, the procedure should have a beneficial cost-effectiveness ratio.
