Abstract
Perspectives. - The development of single use medical devices, if allowing the same security and quality of care, is probably the best answer to minimise cross transmission in the setting of the intensive care unit. For reusable devices or materials, heat steam sterilization at 134 °C during 18 minutes is the method of choice. If not possible, disinfection process must not use aldehydes to minimise the potential risk of prion cross transmission. The recording of process stages and patient uses are necessary to ensure that adequate disinfection was realized and in case of outbreak investigation or of patients' recalling.
