Abstract
Six to ten percent of newborns require intensive care at birth. More than half of these situations can be predicted before birth allowing proper care by the pediatrician in case of difficulty. Nevertheless if there is no in-house pediatrician, midwives may be confronted with initiating intensive care procedures. Improved infant care requires practical training of midwives in neonatal intensive care.
