Abstract
The growing number of individuals with diabetes mellitus type 1 has prompted new methods of treating these patients. An increasing number of individuals of all ages are now using the insulin pump to deliver insulin in a manner that more closely simulates the normal physiologic response of the body. Not everyone is a good candidate for insulin pump therapy, however, and the clinician needs to be able to determine which patients are able to master the techniques required and to watch for the adverse reactions that may develop. This article provides specific information for the clinician who is beginning to order insulin pump therapy for patients.
