Abstract
Staff satisfaction survey results consistently indicate a desire for more involvement in decision making. Creating an appealing organizational culture depends on executives' and managers' ability to create an engaging work environment where leadership is shared. This responsibility includes managing the polarity of directive and participative decisions and advancing shared decision making (SDM) as a key element of the culture. But how will our experiences with SDM affect how we design our future? Do we know from where we have come and what we have learned about this topic in health care?
