Abstract
Poor adherence to medical therapy may account for as much as $300 billion in unnecessary health care expenses each year. Lack of adherence may result from patient-related factors, such as lack of motivation or knowledge to adhere. It may also result from medication results, such as side effects or lack of perceived effect. Finally, lack of adherence may be related to the provider, such as failure to explain the purpose of the treatment or how to properly take medication.
