Abstract
The purpose of this work is to regroup some epidemiological data about an important number of patients undertaken into the unit of Home Enteral Nutrition of the Centre Medical de Forcilles (Ile de France). The results concern 7191 patients on 14.5 years of experience (9490 undertaken on about 1.85 millions of days) and allow to establish an epidemiological database of the patients which have to resort on this kind of services. It includes both the recruiting of these patients, principally hospital (58,7% of the patients), the pathologies found, which 89% are share among cancerous pathologies and pathologies of neurological origin 42%), the sharing out of sexes (6 men for 4 women) and the average of age at the time of the undertaking (61 years old for the men and 71 for the women), the preponderance of the resort to gastrostomy feeding tube (55%), the nutritional intake (between 1600 & 1700 Kcal/day), the complications found, principally digestive (alternation of constipations and diarrheas), the average duration of undertaking (251 days) and the variations of this one according to the pathologies, to the sex and to the form of the hospital leaving, the patients evolution (23% recover an oral alimentation but 41% die during their undertaking), the biological data regularly assessed and the importance of them for the medico-dietetic aftercare of the patients as well as the economics aspects of such an undertaking for the community (4750 € for an average duration undertaking). Due to our particular status (private hospital participating in public hospital service allowed to carry on this activity), it seemed to be important for us to collect these data and to have them available for involved professional because, since September 2000, the passage from the home enteral nutrition to the private providers does not allow hospitals to do it anymore.
