Abstract
Pages 1-2, 51-53, and 123-129 of this volume of Radiography outline the purposes of the Review articles. The current paper discusses the Memorial competitions from 1946-1950. Important contributions made by early Radiographers, radiologists and physicists are described in early editions of Radiography. It was these pioneers who shaped radiology and radiography and laid the foundations of the profession and the process of imaging and radiotherapy. Five prize-winning theses were published and these have been summarised here. There were four diagnostic and one Radiotherapy radiographers and some of them held high office within the Society of Radiographers. Topics included radiography of the spine and pelvis in injury and disease, the radiographic investigation of the urinary tract, radiography of articular surfaces, radiography of the biliary tract and care of the patient for radiotherapy treatment. The purpose of retracing the steps of the early workers was to draw attention of their work to the modern radiographers and also to demonstrate the contribution which these people made to underpinning current imaging and radiotherapy techniques and the scientific principles which supported them. Hopefully the Review Articles will not only give a useful database of reference material but will also stimulate students and radiographers to read further.
