Abstract
Neurons are the fundamental building blocks of the nervous system. This article describes neuronal membrane physiology, the Nernst equation, propagation of action and graded potentials, and introduces the concept that physiology affects neuronal conduction velocity. Electrical and chemical synapses are described and their function is discussed, with particular reference to the action of anaesthetic agents.
