À partir de 1943, le pédopsychiatre est appelé, à l'intérieur de l'établissement pour mieux suivre l'incidence des désordres de la vie mentale à l'origine des troubles du comportement des pensionnaires. À partir de ce moment la prise en charge s'affine progressivement. Définie d'abord de façon descriptive pour une catégorie collectivement qualifiée, elle finit par se fonder sur la souffrance individuelle de jeunes considérés comme patients et les reconnaît, à ce titre, justiciables d'une thérapie séparable de leur éducation ou de leur scolarité.
