In the last decade, overweight and obesity have increased in children and adolescents in all countries. These patients, especially those from certain ethnic groups, are now being diagnosed with impaired glucose tolerance and even type 2 diabetes. Early signs of insulin resistance syndrome and cardiovascular risk are also present. These risk factors appear to act in an additive fashion.
