Abstract
Osteoporosis is characterized by reduced bone resistance that predisposes individuals to fragility fractures. Alterations in bone density and quality contribute to the development of the disease. Because of its ability to predict the risk of fractures, measurement of bone mineral density through dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry is currently the gold standard in the diagnosis of osteoporosis. In clinical practice, therapeutic decisions should be based on the results of densitometry together with evaluation of other risk factors.
