Abstract
Atherosclerosis is a disease that begins early in life. Therefore, knowledge and control of factors related to cardiovascular risk in children will affect the incidence of cardiovascular disease in adults. In our pediatric population, plasma levels of total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol are high and, although high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels are also high, the association between these levels and a high-calorie diet, rich in fats, especially saturated fats, is a cause of concern. However, lipid levels throughout childhood are the result of complex interactions between the diet, genetic determinants and hormonal factors.
