Abstract
Sexual function, its physiology and pathology, have been widely misunderstood throughout history. Moreover, an aura of mystery regarding the misunderstanding of the mechanisms involved in the transmission of life has accompanied these theories until the nineteenth century. In addition, prejudice, wrong research data and, in some cases, fraudulent contributions, have further misdirected possible scientific knowledge on the role of human sexuality, leading to even greater controversies. This is why advances in potential therapies might have been more difficult to achieve than in other areas of knowledge although, in the end, important pharmacological and surgical achievements have been obtained. This article takes a journey on these developments and reflects on what has been achieved and what still needs to be achieved.
