Abstract
In the present review, we approach the role played by the partner in the onset, persistence, evaluation, treatment and outcome of ED and analyze the effect of ED on female sexual function, with an emphasis on future perspectives: although ED consists of the failure to obtain and maintain an erection, this problem affects everyone in the man's milieu, especially his sexual partner. Sexual problems and relationship conflicts are common among men with ED and their female partners. In turn, these problems may lead to, or contribute to, the persistence of ED and may negatively affect treatment and outcome. In this sense, ED should not be viewed simply as the failure to obtain an erection, and consequently the partner's involvement is essential for both diagnosis and treatment. The sexual life quality questionnaire (SLQQ) is available for this task and is the first questionnaire validated to Spanish that allows us to measure these procedures in both men and their partners.
