Abstract
Vertigo is the reason for visiting in 5% of the patients in general practice; 34% are benign positional paroxysmal vertigos, 7% are related to nervous central system lesions, 6% are related to Ménière's diseases, 6% to vestibular neuritis and 6% to phobic postural syndromes. Medical history and clinical examination help in diagnosis making in 3/4 of cases. Diagnostic maneuvers for benign positional paroxysmal vertigo have to be done systematically, together with the screening for signs of lesions in the cerebellar control, oculomotricity and vestibular function. Such elements are to be added to well known standard components of the examination of a patient with vertigo.
