Abstract
This study was undertaken to evaluate patients' response to lingual mechanotherapy. Fourteen females and 11 males were used in the study group. All patients had 7th generation lingual brackets on both arches which were bonded indirectly at the same appointment. Following insertion of the appliance all patients were asked to note every day any kind of problem caused by the lingual brackets: intraoral problems including pain, mastication and oral hygiene, changes in speech patterns and articulation induced by the appliance. After 3 months of treatment, a five-part survey containing 23 questions was submitted to all patients. The results of the present retrospective survey illustrate positive acceptance of the lingual appliance. Impairments were tolerated after an adaptation period which was quite acceptable. In this investigation at the end of one month: discomfort/soreness in tongue was over in 95% of patients, problems of mastification-especially eating firm and fibrous food-were tolerated in 80% of the sample, and speech disturbances were had been overcome by 80% of the population.
