Abstract
Clinical characteristics of memory complaints as well as the qualitative analysis of memory disturbances easily allow the distinction between memory disorders associated with Alzheimer disease and « benign forgetfulness » in most cases. There is no correlation between memory complaints and performance. Memory complaints result from psychoaffective disturbances, mainly anxiety related to personality disorders in young subjects or modifications of the self-identity and decrease in self-esteem associated with ageing in older subjects. Memory complaints should be considered as a multifactorial symptom supported by social factors and objective modifications of memory.
