Abstract
Secnidazole is a new 5-nitro-imidazole demonstrating good antimicrobial activity against parasites and some bacteria. Secnidazole is widely used in the treatment of amoebiasis, giardiasis and genital infections due to Trichomonasvaginalis. Secnidazole demonstrates excellent activity against anaerobic bacteria similar to that of metronidazole. The antibacterial activity includes some curved bacteria such as Helicobacter pylori. The long half-life of secnidazole allows the treatment of vaginal trichomoniasis and giardiasis by a 2 g single dose. The same 2 g treatment applies to bacterial vaginosis. Tolerance is good in relation with single dose treatment.
