Abstract
Visual impairment due to lens displacement is variable, depending on the displacement which may be congenital or acquired, partial or complete, anterior or posterior, central or lateral. The complications observed are primarily high intraocular pressure and retinal detachment. Surgery is almost always needed; its timing depends on the evolution of lens dislocation. The surgical technique is selected according to the aetiology, clinical presentation and disease stage. The dislocated lens is extracted, replaced by an intraocular lens. The one step procedure with intraocular lens placement is now the first choice procedure; it allows faster and better visual restoration. If lens dislocation is congenital it can be due to a more general disease that can be life threatening, such as with Marfan's syndrome that can induce aneurysm of the aorta. Early surgery is simple and effective, but the local prognosis is related to the axial myopia and its retinal complications. Regular and long-term follow-up of these patients is needed.
