Abstract
Spontaneous tears of the extensor tendons are rare, quadriceps tears being even more exceptional. We report four cases including three bilateral tears which occurred in an unusually narrow time frame. This type of injury usually occurs in athletes when landing after a jump. The mechanism was different in our subjects who were all heavy or obese. The injury occurred during daily activities or subsequent to minor trauma. These patients did not have any predisposing risk factors. Use of statins was noted but could not be implicated. Surgical tendon repair was uneventful and the results were very satisfactory. These observations illustrate the importance of recognizing this exceptional pathology.
