Abstract
Several authors have emphasized the usefulness of the anesthesia of the ilioinguinal and iliohypogastric nerves as a test for diagnosis of inguinal canal compression leading to pubalgia in athletes. We recall the pertinent anatomy and discuss the appropriate anesthesic block used in routine practice for hernia surgery, particularly in children. The test protocol enables adaptation to the diagnostic objective. The ilioinguinal and iliohypogastric block can be a useful supplementary tool for the diagnosis of pubalgia in athletes in combination with physical examination and MRI when the initial presentation or the indication for surgery remain unclear.
