Abstract
Monteggia fracture-dislocations refer to fractures of the ulna associated with radiocapitellar dislocations. Accurate diagnosis and timely intervention will allow for the restoration of bony and soft tissue anatomy and expectations for full functional recovery. Treatment of acute injuries usually is dictated by the pattern of ulnar injury. Unfortunately, despite increased awareness and understanding of Monteggia fracture-dislocations, the initial diagnosis often is missed, resulting in late presentation, the need for technically challenging surgical reconstruction, and suboptimal functional outcomes. The purpose of this review is to describe the management of both acute and chronic Monteggia fracture-dislocations, with emphasis on surgical technique, postoperative care, and results of treatment.
