Synthesis of facts. - Gas chromatography isotope ratio mass spectrometry method for confirmation of hydrocortisol and cortisol abuse in sports is proposed. Urinary hydrocortisol and cortisol were converted to volatile compound derivatives which present good gas chromatography properties. Synthetic hydrocortisol and cortisol have different C12/C13 abundance from naturally human hydrocortisol and cortisol and the difference is significant therefore exogenous and endogenous compounds can be distinguished.
