Abstract
The Prodisc-L artificial disc replacement is a useful tool in the treatment of discogenic pain syndrome. The semi-constrained design allows for near anatomic motion while diminishing shear forces on the facets. The surgical technique is reproducible and allows for a minimally invasive safe approach. The sixteen year European experience has been excellent. Under the stringent criteria set forth by the United States Food and Drug Administration investigational device exemption trial, early reports of the Prodisc-L have shown at least equivalence to circumferential fusion with important short term benefits.
