Abstract
The commonest cause of death in children outside infancy is trauma, yet there are few non-hospital-based experts in paediatric trauma. This article examines some of the difficulties encountered in prehospital care and the reasons. The structured approach to the initial assessment and management of the seriously traumatised child before arrival at hospital is discussed.
