Abstract
Job planning has been an annual obligation since the mid-1990s1 [National Health Service. Terms and conditions of service Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales) para 30 (d) AL (MD) 4/96.], however, most Trusts and consultants ignored this important tool until the implementation of the 2003 consultant contract. With 85% of consultants now on the new contract all consultants should be learning the skills needed to maximize the benefit of job planning for themselves and their patients.
