Specific learning difficulties

In spite of disquiet surrounding the construct of IQ, the term 'specific learning difficulties is commonly used in psychology practice to describe the educational problems of children who underachieve relative to their general cognitive ability. The term carries no implications about aetiology or remediation. This contribution describes current scientific knowledge of dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia, drawing out the implications for clinical practice.
