Abstract
Borderline personality is characterized by instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image and affects, and by marked impulsivity. The latter causes considerable problems for practitioners. Aetiology of the disorder is unknown but there is increasing evidence that genetically determined neurobiological vulnerability is unmasked by environmental trauma. There is increasing evidence that psychological treatments are useful but, as yet, it is not possible to recommend a specific method.
