Abstract
Harmonic analysis is used to examine the impact of the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on mean-monthly streamflow variability in Nepal. El Niño causes below normal streamflows in two core regions: the Western Region and the Eastern Region. La Niña produces above normal streamflows in only one core region: the Western Region. There is a stronger El Niño influence on streamflows compared to La Niña. A stronger overall ENSO impact in western Nepal than in eastern Nepal suggests an inverse relationship between El Niño streamflows and monsoon strength and a direct relationship between La Niña flows and monsoon strength.
