Abstract
The solvation shell of OH− ions in water is explored by analyzing neutron diffraction data with hydrogen isotope substitution within the empirical potential structure refinement framework. Upon solvation, the OH− ions form nonplanar hydrogen bonds with four water molecules, giving (H9O5)− complexes. A fifth water molecule weakly bound to the hydroxyl hydrogen is also found.
