Abstract
The solvation shell of OHâ ions in water is explored by analyzing neutron diffraction data with hydrogen isotope substitution within the empirical potential structure refinement framework. Upon solvation, the OHâ ions form nonplanar hydrogen bonds with four water molecules, giving (H9O5)â complexes. A fifth water molecule weakly bound to the hydroxyl hydrogen is also found.
