Abstract
ⶠFee-for-service and patient-based payment both increased national health spending, including private (out-of-pocket) spending. ⶠFee-for service increased inpatient admissions and patient-based payment reduced average length of stay. ⶠOnly patient-based payment appears to have had any beneficial effect on “amenable mortality”, but the results are not robust to different econometric specifications.
