Abstract
⺠Little causal evidence exists linking adolescent health and academic outcomes. ⺠Emerging research in genetics and biology allows a new instrumental variable strategy for some social science questions. ⺠This paper uses a within-family design to assure randomly assigned genetic endowments, the “genetic lottery”, to identify the impact of poor health. ⺠Findings suggest large reductions in school performance for individuals with poor mental health.
