Abstract
⺠We investigate to what extent preferential market access affects bilateral trade. ⺠We provide two indices of direct and relative market access conditions. ⺠Both direct and relative market access conditions affect bilateral trade. ⺠A large majority of countries benefits from the system of preferences. ⺠The system of preferences negatively affects some countries.
