► We investigate to what extent preferential market access affects bilateral trade. ► We provide two indices of direct and relative market access conditions. ► Both direct and relative market access conditions affect bilateral trade. ► A large majority of countries benefits from the system of preferences. ► The system of preferences negatively affects some countries.
