► I show that a nation's labor market institutions affect its trade patterns. ► Workers acquire more relationship-specific skills in a protective labor market. ► Countries with protective labor laws specialize in specific skill-intensive sectors. ► The estimated wage return to firm tenure is used to proxy for a sector's firm-specific skill intensity.
