Abstract
► We analyze the foundations of the relationship between trade and average productivity. ► Trade openness raises average productivity under broad assumptions. ► The selection effect of international competition lifts average productivity. ► We derive a model-based measure of the Ricardian selection effect. ► Ricardian selection raised productivity by 11% above the autarky level in 2005.
