Abstract
⺠We analyze the foundations of the relationship between trade and average productivity. ⺠Trade openness raises average productivity under broad assumptions. ⺠The selection effect of international competition lifts average productivity. ⺠We derive a model-based measure of the Ricardian selection effect. ⺠Ricardian selection raised productivity by 11% above the autarky level in 2005.
