► The effect of financial and property rights institutions on a country's comparative advantage has a threshold effect. ► In economies with low-quality institutions, institutional quality can be more important than factor endowment in determining the comparative advantage. ► International trade may reduce the aggregate income of a developing country. ► International financial capital tends to flow from South to North.
