Abstract
► We analyze the changes of enterprise unions' stances to downsizing after 1997. ► Strong unions encourage the firms to maintain employment until incurring losses. ► After 1997, firms with strong unions became to downsize before suffering losses. ► The changes in unions' stances affected firms' employment adjustment behaviors.
