Abstract
The microstructure and phase decomposition of the ultra-precision machined surface of a furnace-cooled Zn-Al based alloy were studied using back-scattered electron microscopy and electron back-scattered diffraction techniques. Micro-plastic deformation was observed on the machined surface. Phase decomposition was detected as well. In relation to the phase transformation induced by external stresses, the effect of the ultra-precision machining on the microstructural changes and phase decomposition of the surface of the Zn-Al based alloy is discussed.
