Abstract
Director dynamics in a nematic liquid crystal is studied without imposing the one constant approximation. New field equations in the form of Ginzburg-Landau and Schrödinger-type equations have been derived for the rotation and divergence of the director field in terms of splay-bend mode and solved. The results of the director dynamics exhibit relaxation behaviour governed by bow, kink and hole-type deformations.
