Abstract
Validating an automated total blood count requires a multi-step procedure consisting first in eliminating pre-analytical phase anomalies then in detecting technical pitfalls related to the sample. In their absence, any instrument flag associated or not to a quantitative anomaly is an indication to examine a peripheral blood smear when the patient is referred for the first time, in order to validate or to modify the automated differential and to look for qualitative anomalies of the different cell lines. In specific clinical contexts indicated by the consultant, the examination of a blood smear may be necessary even in absence of any abnormality.
