Abstract
Dosimetry of X and gamma-rays is complex. It is necessary to distinguish between the effects on materials and effects on the human body. The old units (rad and rem) are now replaced by new units (gray and sievert) with a value multiplied by 100. We try to explain the use of these units and their applications especially in carcinogenesis and radioprotection. We also discuss the limitations of these units as they do not take into account dose flow or the subject's age.
