Abstract
Since there are numerous pathologies susceptible to express an influenza-like illness, four pathologies diagnosed in Reunion Island are being studied because of their epidemiological interest: influenza, leptospirosis, dengue fever and, malaria. These four pathologies illustrate several factors that intervene on the epidemic chain in this island and the measures that may be taken in order to fight them. Some factors such as the presence of the vector for the dengue fever and malaria are key determinants. Other factors are considered favorable and can be illustrated by the tropical climate but with local modulations since this island of only 2,511 square kilometers experiences many microclimates thanks to a very sharp landscape. In addition, the rapid socio-economical changes that occurred in Reunion Island in less than half a century since it became a French department in 1946 have modified the transmission factors, possibly bringing the spreading to a stop. Finally, the geographic situation in the Indian Ocean as well as the increased exchanges with the near-by islands and France modify the risks of importation of the pathogenic agent.
