Abstract
Progress in medicine has increased the chances of successful management of many clinical conditions. However, the development of immunosuppressive therapy, the increase in iatrogenic factors and the advent of new pathologies such as the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome are responsible for an ever increasing number of deep opportunistic mycoses. The emergence of new pathogenic moulds (Zygomycetes, hyaline and dematiaceous Hyphomycetes) is now recognized as a major problem for immunocompromised patients. Invasive fungal infections have emerged as important cause of morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, clinical, radiological and biological manifestations are seldom specific. The role of the laboratory with the identification of the causative agent of the disease, is essential in establishing a definitive diagnosis, and therefore in guiding therapy. The author tried in this article to review the new or unusual opportunistic fungi from recent literature in addition to conventional or well known pathogenic fungi.
